If I were to start my own internet radio station without the intent of profit, do I need to pay royalty?

I’m thinking of starting an internet radio station; just a personal one and I won’t making money with it. I’ve searched and all I see are laws on profit-making stations and non-profit organizations, still run by some company/school. If an individual like me were to do it, is there any royalty payment needed?

Yes Most Definitely You Would.

    YES
Go to the ASCAP website, it looks like it would cost you approx. $300 (USD) to play music, it’s more if you let listens choose music or if you have sponsors (commercials). Plus your cost for having a website host your radio station.

Depends on the stream and what type of content. Not all stations have to pay. Also Ascap would not be the place to go. SoundExchange controls that BMI, ASCAP, SESAC are different reporting and nly require a one time fee per year. Need more help call Ohio Broadcasting Network for all the answer’s. They can show you where to download your doc files for license. In most cases its only $40.00 a month if needed.

Unfortunately, yes. Legally all Internet stations are required to pay royalties.

LoudCity and Live365 offer "personal" broadcasting packages which have the royalty payment included.
