If you stream a radio station online do you have to pay royalty fees for the music you play?

I want to DJ in a game and play music for friends in it, but I don’t want to break the law. Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding the laws about royalty fees for streaming an online radio station?

You must pay ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and SoundExchange. It can get expensive.

Where/How Can I make my own online radio station?

All it comes up with are those stupid things that pick music you may like based on the artists/songs you like. I want to make an actual online radio station, NOT a podcast, a radio station.

Why is it illegal to download songs on Limewire, but legal to download mp3 of online radio?

Posted by admin on April 9th, 2010 and filed under online radio | 2 Comments »

Windows vista has a online radio gadget, it also give you to download the MP3 song with full qulity for free of charge. Isn’t it kind of the same idea that Limewire does?

Only if the station is playing license free music from new bands trying to get discovered. Regular copyright music is illegal no matter how you get it if you do not pay for it.

There is no sound on you tube or any similar site including online radio?

Posted by admin on April 5th, 2010 and filed under online radio | 2 Comments »

Hi, I am using Windows Vista on my Toshiba Satellite A205.The problem is I cannot hear any sound whenever I visit youtube or any similar sites including online radio.Sounds and volume on any other media such as CD or DVD playback is normal.
Please help.

I see questions just like yours every couple days on Yahoo about vids with NO SOUND,
so I recently did a whole lot of Googling, searching, reading
and poring over dozens of discussion threads and websites,
only to realize that there are no definitive answers out there.

The only semblance of a part-solution which kind of worked
for a couple people would require you to either:
1 — fool around with your "registry" (which I would be totally
against because that could really screw up your computer);
2 — download some utilities (which I would be just as much
against, because that kind of stuff is what probably created
your problem in the first place).

Thus, my first piece of advice is to shutdown then reboot. If
that doesn’t work, clear your "cache" of "Cookies", "History"
and "Temporary Internet Files", thus making your computer
"fresh" in YouTube’s eyes. My infamous "CHTIF" triple-cure
has resolved hundreds of YouTubers’ problems. So why not
yours. Please reboot after doing this:

Internet Explorer 6:
→ Tools → Internet Options
→ Delete Cookies → OK
→ Delete Files → OK
→ Clear History → Yes
→ OK

Internet Explorer 7:
→ Tools → Internet Options → Delete…
→ Delete files → Yes
→ Delete cookies → OK
→ Delete history → OK
→ Close (browsing history window)
→ OK

Mozilla Firefox 3:
→ Tools → Clear Private Data
[x] Browsing History
[x] Download History
[x] Saved Form and Search History
[x] Cache
[x] Cookies
→ Clear Private Data Now

To clear your "cache" within IE 8, Safari, or Google Chrome,

If that does not do the trick, here’s some other suggestions:

♦ If this just happened to you, there’s one person on Yahoo
who discovered their own solution by going back to the last
video they watched that had sound. See "Additional Details":
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090913084412AAqVE5q

♦ If you’ve got "accelerators", get rid of them because most
of them conflict with YouTube. "Ad Block" and "Messenger"
programs also interfere with YouTube.

♦ There could also be conflicts with other video players that
are installed on your computer, like Windows Media Player,
Real Player and QuickTime. Check all of their volumes, too.

♦ The newer versions of Flash are frustrating a whole bunch
of YouTubers. Most updates are typically good for only one
thing: software conflicts. If you are using 1 of the 8 versions
of Flash 10 (yes, there actually are 8), you should consider
the Asker’s comments on this other "Best Answer" of mine:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081125075929AABZpVS

♦ Some people found success by just closing their browser
and restarting it. A couple others rebooted, and one person
wrote to me recently saying that everything started working
magically again the next day with no effort on his part; thus
your problem might just be a temporary glitch.

If you’re able to determine the "cause" and its "cure", could
you please click my avatar and let me know — so that I can
include it in my future Yahoo! Answers. One other apparent
cause so far seems to be if you download "Torrents" music.

I wish you the best of luck and hope that there’s something
in my long answer that will do the trick for you.

Here are 2 other possible solutions to videos with no sound.
They might seem old but they both got very positive results:

How to make an online radio station?

Posted by admin on April 3rd, 2010 and filed under online radio | 1 Comment »

I was wondering if there was anyway of making like a radio station online and having Dj’s play j-pop like a j-pop station except with like English dj’s to announce the music and stuff anyone know How I can get started?

Interesting question, one to which I wish I knew the answer. I know a method you could use… at least I think. The method Online Radio sites use is unknown to me, but it might quite probably be nothing more then a dynamic playlist. I believe it is a streamed playlist, and nothing more. One that may or may not be on shuffle.

If you look, many online radio stations do not in fact have much DJ talk at all and more like a few pertinent transitions. Example the one I listen to known as G93 Hard Rock, they have nothing but transitions every few songs. Now the way that two transitions never play one after another leave me to believe their playlist like stream is more of a constantly edited straightforward one and not one on shuffle.

So, how I see it you would need a web server of some sort. The web server would require some directory containing the tracks to be played. Next you would have some form of playlist (I have seen use of a .pls file used to stream on G93, though I believe it is more of a medium to play the real time tracks that are playing.) and well you would have to have that playlist updated daily to change the order of the tracks.

From there, you would have to play the playlist on the CPU or Web Server or whatever you are using and find a way to broadcast in real time the audio input (or sound card output? I’m not sure which… I’m no expert.) Through however you are doing this, you would have to find a way to stream it. There are many ways to do so, ether through an embedded Windows Media Player, or another form of embedded stream player on a website. If you go with .pls to stream it somehow, it can be played on iTunes through opening the stream.

Now you see there is a gap in all I have said, and that is I have no idea how they broadcast it in itself. Another way you could do one using that sort of stream idea would every day compile a .mp3 file in some Sony editor like "Vegas" or "Acid" or even a simpler editor, and then order all of your media files in the order you want on a single VERY VERY long timeline and then simply compile it as a single .mp3 file and play it on a stream. The problem with this is that it becomes very time consuming to edit since you need to order all the songs on the timeline every day and yea unless you don’t mind one that is just a playlist-like station on a loop that you will only update once a month, then it is not the best idea. Also this method doesn’t explain how some online station list the name and artist of "What’s playing" seemingly automatically, since if it was all one large file… well… it would be hard to tag the times correctly.

In the end using both methods would probably require a dedicated team to split the tasks. Also you said you wanted to DJ on the station. Now, I can’t see that happening with any of the forms on online radio I have listened to, but a method would be to merge the song with the talk on an editor before uploading the track to a media server. Adding a little intro to the song itself so that when the song plays it gets the intro. To add diversity you could add more then one intro to certain songs and have 5 versions of the song, and un-upload and re-upload the different versions so its not always the same intro to the songs.

In the end all this was probably not the best answer for its length because there remains many unanswered questions… but it is a good place to start. With a little research it could maybe help. You can always also go to people or sites that own a streaming online radio and see if you can mail then a formally ask them how they do it, and you never know maybe one of them will be glad to share their secrets with you.

Hope this helped,
-Max

Does anyone have any ideas for an Online radio station name?

Posted by admin on March 27th, 2010 and filed under online radio | 1 Comment »

I am launching an online radio station, but the names I have looked at are being used already. I need ideas, the format is talk, as I do not want to pay a PRS licence so I’m not bothering with music. We have people ringing in and a talk format. Any ideas?

I think that if you have the facilities to launch an Internet Radio station, then surely you should be able to conjure up an original name for it. In my experience, talking and phone-in radio stations are not very edifying because the ranters wish to use the airwaves to bully listeners verbally.
As I am a member of P.R.S. for Music and P.P.L., I think that it is pathetic to wish to dodge payment on those grounds. I have had to sacrifice a normal life merely to be a musician and songwriter which does not bring in too much cash. I receive royalties from global radio stations from P.P.L. but I have not caught up with Internet Radio yet.
Certainly you have the option, but a radio station without even a jingle may as well be walkie talkie hobby jobby.
