Lots of folks have answered you and I love it! That there are young people who like the music of my generation (I’m probably old enough to be your father or grandfather) is very encouraging. That the negative and vulgar "music" so many young people listen to these days hasn’t completely taken hold of all of you makes me smile.
BTW, you’re still getting older ;<)
check the web for radio stations dot com and it will bring up all the stations in what ever city you live in if you state it.
Get down tonight
Got my points!

Do You think anybody wants to hear the classics anymore on the radio, or is it just me?
This is all hypothetical
Looking at the arbitron ratings, http://www.radiodailynews.com/arbs.htm
very few oldies stations are listed as #1, but they do end up in the top 5 in NYC, or Detroit, or Toledo OH and other places. Probably signal, and presentation is everything. I hate tight playlist oldies stations, because I’m really tired of the same 300 songs over and over again. WCBS-FM’s nearly 5 share is probably not too shabby.
Of course, what’s the differfence between Classic hits and Oldies?
It seems to me like there aren’t any classic, timeless music being created by this generation of music makers.
Am I right or wrong. What are the songs of today that will be enjoyed by future generations?
You are completely right. All of this music is tasteless and ridiculous.
When I was like 12, I’d complain that all the music my mom listened to sounded the same – all of the oldies stations. I’m 23 now and for the past five years, I can only find myself listening to 3 stations. Oldies, classic rock, and "hits from the 70s/80s/90s" (because I grew up in the 90s and get quite nostalgic.)
We will not have a Beatles, a Dylan, a Doors, a Hendrix, a Joplin, an Elvis, a Smokey Robinson, a Temptations… the music of today is so FLAT and hollow. I say this as someone who still does listen to current music, at times, too… but really? For the most part, it’s like "what?"
Christ, I hate rap and I can even recognize persons like 2pac and Biggie, Dr. Dre were brilliant in comparison to some of these idiots out there today! No one cares about singing anything that’s true to _them_ anymore (whatever their truths may be.) You take rap from the 80s, too, and it doesn’t even compare to all of this garbage by 50 cent, T.I., etc.
In the 80s, rappers didn’t need to swear and say "n*gger" to get their points across. They didn’t need dumb bimbos in their videos. Same goes for rock musicians. It has all become a heaping pile of garbage. Way too focused on an "image" rather than simple MUSIC.
2 in our area have switched already from the top 40 types
Radio stations are like any other business…out to make money. They make their $$$ from the commercials they run.
Advertisers for the most part choose stations who target listeners who have $$$ to spend. Top 40 stations mainly appeal to the young who have no or very little $$ to spend in the market, so if older people with cash listen to older music, what do you think the station is gonna play?
The oldies radio stations play a lot of 70’s music. I’m wondering if the new decade will now qualify a new decade of music as oldies. What are anyone else’s thoughts?
Songs from 1989 are 20 years old! I guess you can call them oldies. It also depends on your age though. To a 20 year old they are oldies. As a child of the ’60’s and teen of the ’70’s, I don’t consider ’80’s music oldies yet. In the 70’s, I remember hearing songs from the ’50’s and considered them oldies. I hope that wasn’t totally confusing.
Great Question!
Yep…
Kool 94.5 FM, as far as I know this is the best and maybe only Oldies station on FM in Phoenix.
http://www.koolradio.com/
IMO, their mix of music has gotten a lot better in recent years…
When I was little (around 1990), my mom played oldies music (she was born in ‘57) and I grew up loving the oldies she played and the 60s/70s rock my dad played (the Beatles, Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, the Doors, etc). I need someone to jog my memory!! I’m pregnant with my first child and have been keeping earphones on my belly for the baby to listen to music. What are some good oldies tunes I may be overlooking?
Thanks!!
Edit: By oldies, I mean stuff like California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and the Papas, Crimson and Clover by ?, Runaway by Del Shannon, songs along that line. Thanks!
Elton John, Marc Bolan, Bread, Air Supply, Queen, Steve Miller Band, Beach Boys, The Shadows, Cliff Richard, Little Richard, Bill Hayley & The Comets, Elvis, Eddie Cochrane…
I could carry on, but that lot should keep you going for a while.
Best of luck with your bundle of joy.
I just caught the end of a song and I’d really like to know what it was. I’m listening to Cool 92.9 in the Mid Hudson Valley, but I think that this might be the nationwide show with Tom Kent. It was played at around 10:45. The song played immediately after it was Mrs. Robinson by Paul Simon. I only caught the last 30 seconds but it was mainly just drums and long sustained horns outlining the harmonic motion. The vocals were just doing something rhythmic that sounded great with it. Every few bars everything would drop out except for the vocals (multiple voices) and they would do a nice little harmony. I pray that somebody was listening and now reads this because I’d love to know what this song is. Unfortunately there were no lyrics to identify it by. Even if you didn’t hear it, feel free to posit a guess based on my description (I know it’s a long shot, but I’m that desparate…).
I did as you said (I doubted I would get to talk to him as it is a nationwide show) and did get a song name. Unfortunately the recording of this song that I have is very different from what I heard on the radio. You get best answer for at least giving some good advice.
No clue, sorry. Try calling the station to find out the name of it. It shouldn’t be hard for them to look back through their playlist considering the amount of detail you have.
